While India gained independence in 1947, it was on January 26, 1950 that we transitioned into a Republic. The day was chosen to honor the 1930 declaration of Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) by the Indian National Congress.

Republic Day Quiz

It marks the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect. This transitioned India from a British dominion into a sovereign, democratic republic governed by its own laws.
